Choosing a budgeting app
Budgeting apps fail for one reason: people stop opening them. Almost everything worth checking comes back to whether the app will still be part of your week in three months.
What we assess
Bank connections that hold
Broken connections are the main reason people abandon these apps. Check that your specific banks are supported in your country, and how often connections need re-authorising.
The method it enforces
Zero-based budgeting, envelope systems and simple spend-tracking suit different people. An app that fights your natural approach will lose.
Manual entry as an option
Some people budget better by entering transactions themselves, because the friction is the point. If that is you, check it is supported properly.
Data privacy
You are handing over a complete record of your financial life. Read what the provider does with it, whether data is sold or used for marketing, and how to delete it.
Shared household access
If you budget with a partner, multi-user access is essential and is often restricted to higher tiers.
Cost against benefit
A subscription is worth it if it changes behaviour. Set a reminder to review after three months and cancel if nothing has changed.
Common mistakes
- Paying annually for an app you stop opening in week three.
- Connecting accounts without reading the data policy.
- Choosing a method that does not match how you actually think about money.
- Tracking spending meticulously without ever setting a target to compare it against.
Our current picks
We are not recommending providers in this category yet. We only list a provider once we have checked its costs, protections and terms ourselves, and we will not publish a comparison table we cannot stand behind. The criteria above are what we assess against, and they work just as well if you are comparing on your own today.
