How this calculator works
Your FIRE number is annual spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate. At 4% that is 25 times spending; at 3.5% it is roughly 28.6 times.
Years to FIRE are found by growing your current portfolio month by month with your contributions until it reaches that number. Coast FIRE discounts the FIRE number back to today at your expected return over the years remaining to age 65.
Choosing a withdrawal rate
The 4% figure came from studies of thirty-year retirements using historical US data. A retirement starting in your forties may need to last forty or fifty years, which is beyond what those studies tested.
Many early retirement plans use 3.25% to 3.5% for that reason. Move the slider and watch the FIRE number respond - it is the single most consequential input on this page.
Frequently asked questions
What is a FIRE number?
The portfolio that funds your annual spending indefinitely at your chosen withdrawal rate. At 4% it is 25 times annual spending.
Is the 4% rule still valid?
It was derived from thirty-year historical periods. A retirement starting in your forties may be far longer, which is why many plans now use 3.25% to 3.5%.
What is Coast FIRE?
The balance at which your existing investments alone will grow into your full FIRE number by traditional retirement age, so further contributions become optional.
How is Lean and Fat FIRE calculated here?
Lean uses 70% of the spending you enter and Fat uses double it, both divided by your withdrawal rate. They are conventions, so adjust your spending figure for your own definition.
Should my house be included?
No. Only assets that can produce spendable income count towards a withdrawal calculation.
