What does 10,000 become in 30 years?

One deposit, thirty years, no further contributions. This is compounding in its purest form, and the result is usually larger than people guess. Change the rate below to see how sensitive it is.

Most of the growth happens late

At 8%, a 10,000 lump sum roughly doubles every nine years. The first doubling adds 10,000; the third adds 40,000. Nothing about your behaviour changes between them - only the base the return is applied to.

This is why leaving an investment alone is so much more powerful than timing it, and why the years you can least afford to interrupt are the last ones.

The rate matters more than the amount

Two percentage points of annual return, sustained for thirty years, changes the result by more than doubling the initial deposit would. That is the strongest argument for keeping investment costs low.

It is also a warning: the same sensitivity applies downwards. Test your plan at a lower rate before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is 10,000 worth in 30 years at 8%?

Just over 100,000 with monthly compounding and no further deposits. Change the rate above to see other outcomes.

Is 8% a realistic return?

It is near the long-run nominal average for broad developed-market equity indices, before inflation and costs. Real returns have been lower.

Does compounding frequency matter much?

Less than the rate. Moving from yearly to monthly compounding at 8% adds a few percent over thirty years - useful, but not decisive.

What if I add monthly contributions?

Set a monthly figure above and the chart splits your deposits from the growth on top of them.
